The eating qualities of yellowtail scad can be greatly improved if they are killed immediately by iki jime before placing them in an ice slurry after bleeding.
Fish Description:
- Yellowtail scad, or yakkas, are a relatively small, torpedo shaped trevally with a greenish brown dorsal colouration over silvery flanks, a distinct dark spot on the rear margin of the operculum, and a bright yellow tail.
- This species feeds voraciously on zooplankton as well as small crustaceans and worms.
- Growth is initially rapid but slows down once they mature at 3-4 years of age and 28-30 cm long. Maximum age of the largest yellowtail scad is around around 25 years old.
Fish Distribution:
- Yellowtail scad are commonly encountered in large schools in estuaries and also inshore and offshore waters to depths of around 150 meters at water temperatures warmer than around 13°C.
- They commonly occur around structures including wharves, and both artificial and natural rocky reefs.
Fish Size Common Length:
Commonly encountered between 18-30 cm, maximum size around 50 cm.
