The eating qualities of striped threadfin can be greatly improved if they are killed humanely by iki jime or a firm knock to the head before placing them in an ice slurry after bleeding.
Fish Description:
- Bluish silver-grey with 7 thin olive/brown longitudinal stripes in larger specimens.
- Threadfin are so named for the sensory filaments at the base of each pectoral fin. The sensory filaments are used to locate food items in muddy water.
Fish Distribution:
- This species is found over muddy bottoms in estuaries, coastal beaches and relatively deep waters (to 100m) throughout the Indo-West Pacific region.
- In Australia they are found along the entire tropical and subtropical northern coastline.
Fish Size Common Length:
15-30 cm, maximum size around 50 cm.
