Dispatch Method:
Beware of the sharp teeth of hussar when handling them. They should be killed humanely by iki jime or a firm knock to the head before placing them in an ice slurry after bleeding.
Fish Description:
- The brown hussar has a brown to khaki coloured band running from the snout to the tail.
- The closely related Pink Hussar (Lutjanus adetii) looks similar but is pink in colour with a yellow band from snout to tail. Both species have similar brain locations.
- Brown hussar are slow growing, maturing at 2-3 years old at between 15 and 20 cm long. They have been aged up to 12 years old.
Fish Distribution:
- These fish inhabit coral reefs throughout the Indo-west Pacific region.
Fish Size Common Length:
20-35 cm, maximum size around 40 cm.
