To maximise their eating qualities spotted grunter should be killed humanely by iki jime or a firm knock to the head before placing them in an ice slurry after bleeding. Other species of closely related grunters have similar brain locations.
Color is generally silver above, white below. Small specimens have numerous spots aligned horizontally or fused into horizontal lines.
Large specimens plain silver or with scattered charcoal scale spots on back and upper sides.
This species occurs in tropical estuaries throughout the Indo-West Pacific, from the Red Sea to the Philippines, north to southern Japan, and south to northern Australia and New Caledonia.
Fish Size Common Length:
25-35 cm, maximum size around 70 cm.
